Pros

  • Dictionary.net supports over 50 languages and can even translate languages entered in combinations.
  • The program can be opened with simple keyboard or mouse shortcuts, but text can also be translated quickly if the user merely selects a portion of text with his or her mouse. Overall, look-ups and translations are quick and relatively free of hassle.

Cons

  • Characteristic of all instant translators, it is impossible to translate anything more than short, simple sentences with perfect results. Dictionary.net works fine for fast dictionary look-ups but is nowhere near good enough to replace professional translations when they're needed.
  • There seem to be some problems with the automatic language detection. Dictionary.net is supposed to be capable of instantly detecting languages entered in the look-up but may fail to actually perform as desired in this regard.

Dictionary.net is a desktop dictionary and instant translator powered by the same technology that powers Google Translate. This makes Dictionary.net a fast and convenient solution for users who need to look up the meanings of words or even entire sentences written in a foreign language. Instantaneous translations are available in over 50 languages, making it an especially convenient tool for people who study a foreign language or frequently encounter foreign words online. Similar to Google's online translation function, Dictionary.net is designed to detect languages automatically.

The program doesn't require a computer installation and can be opened from the computer's System Tray with a simple mouse or keyboard shortcut. When not actively in use, Dictionary.net runs unnoticed in the background and doesn't interfere with regular computer usage. An even more convenient option is to highlight a word or sentence and then open the program using one of the predefined shortcuts, which will open Dictionary.net with the translation already loaded.
